It can be a protective friend or a destructive foe, and much of the balance lies in how we live.
Inflammation is one of the body’s most elegant protective systems. When it works as designed, it is a short, decisive response that clears injury or infection and then quietly steps aside so that healing and repair can finish.
However, when it lingers, when it becomes chronic, the same mechanisms that once protected us begin to wear on tissues, metabolism, mood and our long-term resilience.

Acute inflammation is fast, local and purposeful. Within minutes of injury or infection, blood vessels dilate and become more permeable. Plasma proteins and white blood cells, especially neutrophils, move into the tissue.
The familiar signs—redness, warmth, swelling and pain—reflect increased blood flow and the controlled release of signalling molecules. These cells clear debris, neutralise pathogens and begin the work of repair.

An eating pattern centred on vegetables, fruit, fibre-rich plants, quality proteins and healthy fats—while reducing ultra-processed foods and excess refined sugar—lowers the inflammatory burden from the gut and adipose tissue.

Cortisol: Essential Regulator, Not Villain
Cortisol has become one of the most misunderstood hormones in modern wellness conversations — routinely labelled the ‘stress hormone’ and treated as something to minimise at all costs.
Applied to inflammation, that framing is actively unhelpful.
Cortisol is created out of cholesterol and it is mainly produced in the adrenal glands on top of our kidneys.
However, it is so important for our bodies, essential really, that it is also made by other parts of our body: skin, thymus, intestines, parts of our brain and some of our immune tissue.
Its release is triggered, monitored and controlled through many sophisticated interrelated mechanisms.
One of the most direct ways is through a part of our brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus will instruct the pituitary gland to send detailed regulatory messages to the adrenal glands to either increase or decrease the amount of cortisol built and released.
This fine-tuned monitoring system runs continually, day and night, and is based on the intricate needs of our bodies. In certain diseases (such as Cushing’s or Addison’s disease), this can go awry, but in most cases of imbalance, it is our lifestyle choices (and sometimes poorly managed medication or supplements) which are to blame.
Cortisol plays many active, important roles in our bodies. It helps to increase our energy, regulate blood pressure, inflammation, our unique sleep patterns and circadian rhythm, and more.
When it comes to inflammation, its relationship is not linear. It depends very much on the amount of cortisol which is released, which in turn can be influenced by things as subjective as our mood.
Baseline levels of cortisol help our immune system to be ready when we need it and won’t suppress it.
Then, when an acute inflammation response is needed—infection, injury, hard physical effort—cortisol rises into a higher (but still physiologically helpful) range and becomes clearly anti-inflammatory.
It helps to limit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and prevent excessive immune-cell activity at the site. This helps to prevent our own body’s immune response from turning destructive.
In short, cortisol is part of the resolution machinery of healthy acute inflammation. Without an appropriate rise, the acute inflammation phase runs longer than our bodies need and causes more tissue damage.
Problems appear only when our cortisol level remains too high for too long, or when our body’s feedback loops are disrupted. Only then come the feared issues of reduced immune function, metabolic imbalance and visceral fat gain.
The modern habit of trying to reduce any detectable cortisol is not helpful. It creates a villain out of a hero.
