Exercise and Irisin

All fit people who exercise know how good it makes you feel. Those who don’t exercise, well, they know how bad it makes you feel: Stiff and sore and out of breath.

Scientists have isolated a chemical, made during exercise, that is credited with carrying the “feel good message” from and to your brain.


Endorphins ("endogenous morphine") are endogenous opioid peptides that function as neurotransmitters.[1] They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during exercise,[2]excitement, pain, consumption of spicy food, love and orgasm,[3][4] and they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a feeling of well-being.

Opiates, mentioned here, are the chemicals related to Opium: Morphine, Codeine and a host of other “pain medicines”.

Now, another hormone has been discovered, made by your muscles during exercise, that appears to have numerable health benefits:


Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have isolated a muscle hormone which may be responsible for the many health benefits of exercise. The scientists have named the hormone irisin after the Greek messenger Goddess, Iris.

The benefits are numerous:

Irisin levels rise when people exercise. One effect of this is to convert white fat, the common type of fat that everyone knows too well, into brown fat. While white fat is used to store energy (calories), brown fat seems to be more involved in burning it. Irisin also improves glucose tolerance and causes insulin levels to rise, suggesting that it may be helpful in treating diabetes.
